The Belonging of the Soul: Do You Recognize the Voice Guiding Your Life?

Dear friends, brothers and sisters, peace be with you.

How has your life been lately? In this fast-paced era of information overload, the moment we open our eyes each morning, we are flooded with thousands of "voices." There are comparisons from social media, the urgency of work performance, the expectations of family responsibilities, and even those lingering anxieties deep within ourselves. Amid so many voices, do you feel exhausted? Are you also looking for a direction where your soul can truly find rest? Today, we will look together at John 10:1-6. Through a beautiful parable, Jesus leads us into a profound conversation about "voice" and "the belonging of life."

To understand the context, Jesus had just healed a man blind from birth. However, the Pharisees, who thought they knew the truth, cast this man out of the synagogue simply because they stubbornly clung to religious rules. Seeing the coldness and hypocrisy of these religious leaders, Jesus spoke this story of the "sheepfold and shepherd"—a scene incredibly familiar to Middle Eastern people at that time—to the surrounding crowd and His disciples. In the wilderness of that era, several shepherds would mix their sheep together in a single public sheepfold at night, guarded by a gatekeeper. When morning came, each shepherd would approach the gate.

Today, let us follow this vivid imagery from daily life and reflect on the spiritual insights this passage brings to transform our lives:

First, we see the "Legitimate Identity" of the Shepherd—He is the only source of true peace for our lives.

The scripture begins with a sharp contrast between two ways of entering the sheepfold. Anyone who does not enter by the gate but climbs in by some other way is a thief and a robber. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. Why? Because the gatekeeper recognizes him and opens the gate for him. In our lives, too many external voices try to "climb in by another way," forcefully intervening and attempting to dominate our lives. For instance, the world tells you, "You will only be happy if you possess more wealth," or your inner fear whispers, "You are not good enough to be loved." These voices, which bypass the gate of grace and influence you through material temptation or emotional blackmail, only intend to steal your joy and destroy your confidence. But Lord Jesus is different. He comes with the legitimate authority of God the Father, openly and full of grace, to the door of our lives. He does not need manipulation to control you, because He is the Lord of life—the Great Shepherd who opens the door with love.

Second, we see the "Intimate Following" of the Sheep—Only through a deep life relationship can we recognize His voice.

The next scene is incredibly heartwarming: after entering, the shepherd "calls his own sheep by name and leads them out." When he has brought out all his own, "he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him." This picture reveals that the key to the sheep following the shepherd is not because he threatens them with a rod, nor because the sheep analyzed the situation logically. The sheep follow simply because "they know his voice." In the Middle East, when different flocks are mixed together, a shepherd only needs to call out from the gate with his unique cry, and his sheep will instantly prick up their ears, walk out of the confusion, and follow him. This is a tacit understanding built over long companionship and mutual trust. Beautifully, the shepherd "goes on ahead." This means no matter how rugged the road ahead is, He shields us from the storm and scouts the path. Our blind spot in life is that we often want to see every step of the future clearly before we move. Yet, the spiritual secret is this: Even when the path ahead is unclear, as long as we recognize that the voice leading us belongs to the Lord, we can follow with peace of mind. They will never follow a stranger because they do not recognize a stranger's voice.

Third, we see the "Spiritual Blindspot" of the Disciples—The leap from intellectual understanding to spiritual awakening.

Verse six gives us a somewhat disheartening footnote: "Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them." We might wonder how they could fail to understand such a practical, everyday metaphor. In truth, this often mirrors us. At that time, the disciples' minds were filled with expectations of a "political Messiah." They wanted Jesus to become king and crush Roman rule with an iron rod. When their eyes were fixed solely on their own expectations and worldly standards, they could not comprehend Jesus' gentle, humble, and pastoral heart. Many times, what limits our understanding of God's will is not our intelligence, but the stubborn attachments we refuse to let go of. This passage serves as a profound reminder not to merely study the words of Scripture intellectually, but to cultivate sensitivity to the Great Shepherd’s voice through a submissive heart in daily prayer and quietness.

Dear friends, brothers and sisters, this song of life from the sheepfold still speaks to our hearts today. The world is beckoning you with various noisy voices, trying to pull you in different directions. But please remember, there is a Lord who loves you, and He is still calling you by your name today. He recognizes your weaknesses, He understands your weariness, and He stands at the door, desiring to lead you beside quiet waters.
