The Life Journey of Walking in the Light – Are you groping in the darkness, or following the True Light of life?
Dear friends, brothers and sisters, peace be with you.
Have you ever had the experience of walking in a pitch-black night where you couldn't even see your own hand? That sense of the unknown—not knowing if your next step will fall into a pit or crash into something—often fills the heart with fear and anxiety. On our journey of life, we often encounter such "dark nights of the soul." Facing confusion about the future, broken relationships, or an unspoken emptiness deep within, we frequently find ourselves groping in the dark, unable to find a way out. Today, we are going to look at the Gospel of John, chapter 8, verses 12 to 20 together.
The background of this passage is incredibly beautiful. It was during the Festival of Tabernacles, and the massive golden candelabras in the Temple's Court of the Women were lit up, symbolizing how God once guided the Israelites with a pillar of fire in the wilderness. Right amidst this brilliant radiance, Jesus stood up and delivered a profound, earth-shaking declaration to the crowd. This passage offers a deep reminder for our faith life today; it acts like a piercing beam of light, illuminating the unseen blind spots in our lives. Today, I want to share three key points with you.
First, we see Jesus’ "Declaration" — He is the True Light that illuminates life and brings hope.
In verse 12, Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." In the context of that time, this statement was revolutionary. Jesus didn't just say He could bring light; He pointed out that He is the light itself. This light is vitally connected to each of our lives. In darkness, we easily lose our way, stumble, or even get consumed by sin and despair. But when we choose to "follow" Jesus—which means adjusting our steps in daily life to submit to His guidance—we no longer need to grope around. This true light not only dispels the shadows in our souls but also directs our life's path, allowing us to receive the "light of life" filled with abundant and eternal value.
Second, we see Jesus’ "Testimony" — The Father’s presence is an undeniable proof of reality.
As soon as Jesus said this, the Pharisees stepped forward to challenge Him: "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid!" They used rigid legal codes to question Jesus. Yet, Jesus responded gently but firmly, stating that His testimony is completely worthy of acceptance because He knows exactly where He came from and where He is going, whereas the Jews only judge "according to the flesh" (by human standards). Jesus further pointed out that He is not alone; the Father who sent Him stands with Him, which perfectly fulfills the law's requirement that "the testimony of two witnesses is true." This reminds us of a blind spot in our lives: we often behave like the Pharisees, using worldly logic and calculated standards to measure God's handiwork, while neglecting that the deepest spiritual testimony always comes from our intimate presence and communion with the Heavenly Father.
Third, we see the Pharisees’ "Blind Spot" — Self-righteous tradition blocks the true knowledge of God.
Those Jews could not understand who Jesus meant by "Father" and even asked sarcastically, "Where is your father?" Jesus pierced straight to the root of their unbelief: "You do not know me or my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also." The reason the Jews did not believe was due to their "self-righteous" mindset. They thought that because they knew the law inside out and carried the lineage of Abraham, they automatically understood God best. This proud presumption became a veil over their spiritual eyes, causing them to see Jesus and hear the truth every day, yet fail to recognize that the Lord of life was right before them. The passage concludes by noting that although Jesus taught in the sensitive treasury area, no one seized Him because His hour had not yet come. This once again shows us the absolute sovereignty of the Heavenly Father.
Dear brothers and sisters, in our daily lives, are we relying on our own cleverness to grope through the dark, or are we tightly following the True Light that has come to us from on high? Jesus gently invites us today through this passage to lay down our self-importance and worldly frameworks. When we are willing to acknowledge our limitations and open our hearts to let Jesus' light shine in, the darkness in our lives must completely flee.
May the Holy Spirit illuminate our hearts today, removing our spiritual blind spots and prejudices. May God's grace and true light guide your footsteps personally today, so that in this ever-changing world, through a deep connection with the Lord, your every step may be calm, steady, and full of hope.
