Who is the True Source of Your Life? – Can You Hear God's Voice?

Dear friends, brothers and sisters, peace be with you.

In our daily lives, we often use many "labels" to introduce ourselves. We might say which prestigious school we graduated from, what company we work for, or that we are the descendants of a well-known family. These external titles and backgrounds often bring us a sense of security and pride. But in our faith, do we unconsciously use "spiritual labels" to define ourselves as well? Today, we are going to look at the Gospel of John, chapter 8, verses 39 to 47 together.

The background of this passage is a continuation of Jesus' conversation with the Jews in the temple. At that time, the Jews were extremely angry because Jesus had pointed out that they were "slaves," and the debate between them reached a boiling point. The Jews tried to use their proudest ancestor to refute Jesus, proving their purity and superiority. This passage acts like a sharp yet loving scalpel, precisely cutting open the hardened shell of our faith, allowing us to see the true condition of our hearts. Today, I want to share three key points with you.

First, we see the Jews' "Pride" — The blind spot of a faith framed by lineage.

In verses 39 to 41, we see Jesus and the Jews fiercely debating a core question: "Who are the true children of Abraham?" The Jews self-righteously claimed, "Abraham is our father." They built their faith on fleshly lineage and historical tradition, thinking that simply having this identity automatically granted them God's approval. However, Jesus bluntly pointed out that a true "child of Abraham" is not determined by bloodline, but by "actions" and "life." The characteristic of Abraham's life was listening to God and receiving His messengers; but this group of people, who claimed to be Abraham's descendants, were full of hatred and even wanted to kill Jesus, who was preaching the truth. In our church life today, do we fall into the same blind spot? We might feel that because we are "third-generation Christians," attend gatherings weekly, and serve steadily, we are automatically close to God. But Jesus reminds us that external religious credentials cannot represent our true, inner spiritual life.

Second, we see Jesus’ "Test" — True relationship lies in love and listening.

So, how can we test whether a person has a genuine relationship with God? In verses 42 to 46, Jesus gives us a very clear standard. Jesus said, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God." In other words, the best way to test a person's relationship with God is to see whether they "love Jesus" and whether they can "understand and receive Jesus' words." Jesus frankly pointed out the root of the Jews' problem: the reason they could not hear His words was that the source of their life was wrong. Jesus described them as belonging to "your father, the devil," because they followed the devil's desires—being a murderer, a liar, and not holding to the truth. In contrast, Jesus Himself came from God; He is without sin and speaks only the truth. This reminds us that when our hearts are filled with worldly lies, pride, or bitterness, our spiritual ears become blinded, and we naturally cannot hear the voice of truth.

Third, we see the "Mark" of Belonging to God — Hearing and receiving God's word.

Finally, in verse 47, Jesus draws a beautiful and profound conclusion: "Whoever belongs to God hears what God says." If we put this in our own words, it means: "A person who truly belongs to God and is born of God will have a heart that resonates with God's voice." Just like a child in a noisy crowd can always instantly recognize their parents' call. Hearing God's word is not just about the ears hearing sounds or the brain understanding words; it is an internal hunger and thirst for righteousness, and a willingness to obey with action. The Jews could not hear it simply because their hearts did not belong to God.

Dear brothers and sisters, where is the true source of our lives? Are we clinging tightly to those perishable external labels, or are we truly connected to the Source who gives life? True faith is not an inherited system, but a relationship full of love and submission.

May God's grace deeply touch you today, removing all the deceptive noise and religious pride from our lives, and granting us a tender heart. Let us all become people who truly belong to God, able not only to hear His voice but to live out the beautiful life of God's children, filled with truth and love.
