John 15:18-27: Why Does Choosing to Love Sometimes Bring Hostility Instead?

Dear friends, brothers and sisters, peace be with you. Have you ever faced coldness or even exclusion from people around you because you lived out your faith or held to certain values, making you wonder if you'd done something wrong? Today, let's look together at John 15:18-27.

On the eve of facing the cross, Jesus took special time to warn the disciples in advance about the situation they would face: "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you."

Jesus said the world hates them "because you are not of the world" — what logic does this overturn?

Jesus said, "If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you" (v.19). This statement overturns a logic we often hold — we often assume that as long as we're good enough or likable enough, we'll be accepted by everyone. But Jesus points out that being rejected by the world is sometimes precisely because we've chosen values different from the world's — not evidence of failure, but the natural result of faithfulness to our faith.

"A servant is not greater than his master" — how does this help our mindset when facing persecution?

Jesus reminded the disciples, "Remember the word that I said to you: 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you" (v.20).
