Stepping Out of the Labyrinth of Fear: Reclaiming Your Life's Security – Who is the True Shepherd of Your Life?
Dear friends, brothers and sisters, peace be with you.
How have you been lately? In this era of information overload, where everything demands efficiency and competition, do you often feel an indescribable anxiety in your heart? We run relentlessly every day, thinking that once we achieve a certain position or save a certain amount of money, our hearts will settle. Yet, more often than not, even when we finally get what we wanted, that sense of security vanishes in a flash, leaving us in deeper fear and exhaustion. Today, let us look together at the Gospel of John, chapter 10, verses 7 to 13.
In that ancient Jewish society sustained by shepherding, sheepfolds were usually low walls built of stones without a fixed wooden gate. At night, the shepherd would sleep across the only entrance, using his own body as "the door of the sheep." Any sheep entering or leaving, or any wild beast trying to break in, had to pass through the shepherd's body. To the people of that time, who were deeply oppressed by religious leaders and spiritually displaced, these words were a great beacon of light. Therefore, from this vivid imagery, let us reflect together on the comfort and way out that Jesus' words bring to us at this very moment.
First, we see Jesus declaring Himself as "the door of the sheep" —— only through Him can we find true freedom and security.
Jesus said, "If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture." Nestled here is a beautiful promise: true security is not a prison that restricts us, but a safe harbor that brings freedom. When we are willing to entrust our lives to Jesus and step into His governance, we can "go in and out and find pasture" — representing a state of life enjoying abundance under protection, entirely free from fear. Conversely, Jesus describes those who do not enter through the door as "thieves." In our daily lives, what are these uninvited thieves? Often, they are the societal values whispering, "You are not good enough," or "You need more wealth to be safe." These voices do not stem from the love of Jesus; they slip into our souls only to steal our peace, kill our joy, and destroy our sense of worth. Are you currently allowing these "thieves" to rob your life?
Second, we see "the life choice" between the Good Shepherd and the hired hand —— Jesus brings us an unafraid, abundant life through His sacrificial love.
Jesus further draws a stark contrast between a "hired hand" and the "Good Shepherd." A hired hand cares only for personal gain and wages. When difficulties and challenges arise (like a pack of wolves), his first thought is self-preservation, so he abandons the sheep and flees because the sheep do not belong to him. This mirrors the worldly powers, relationships, or fame we often rely on; when our lives face ultimate crises and spiritual rock bottoms, they often fail to provide genuine salvation. But Jesus is the "Good Shepherd." His love for us is a sacrificial love that pays the ultimate price and never abandons us. He declared that He came so that we "may have life, and have it more abundantly."
When we reflect on our own lives, have we truly received this "more abundant life"? Especially in the aspect of our emotions, thoughts, and mindsets, which are most prone to weakness. An abundant life does not mean our journey will be smooth sailing without any suffering; rather, it means that amidst the storms and trials, there is a steadfast peace and an unshakable hope deep within our hearts. When you see the Good Shepherd shielding you from the cold wind and the enemy with His own body, you can live a life of dignity, love, and power even in an anxious environment.
Dear friends, do not let the voices of the world steal your joy anymore. Turn to this Good Shepherd. He knows your name, and He is stretching out His hands to become the protective shield of your life.
May Jesus, the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for you and will never abandon you in the storm, take you by the hand today and lead you out of the labyrinth of anxiety. May His abundant love and unshakable peace flood your weary soul like a warm current at this very moment, allowing you to find the deepest rest for your soul under His faithful protection.
