大祭司說：「這些事果然是這樣嗎？」

Then said the high priest, Are these things so?

司提反說：「諸位父兄聽著！當日我們的祖宗亞伯拉罕在美索不達米亞、還未住哈蘭的時候，榮耀的神向他顯現，

And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,

說：『你要離開本地和親族，往我所要指示你的地方去。』

And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.

亞伯拉罕就離開迦勒底人之地，住在哈蘭。他父親死了之後，神使他從那裡遷到你們現在所住之地；

Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.

在這地方，神沒有給他產業，連立腳之地也沒有給他；但應許要將這地賜給他和他的後裔為業，那時他還沒有兒子。

And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

神說，他的後裔必寄居外邦，那裡的人要叫他們作奴僕，苦待他們四百年。

And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.

神又說：『他們所要服事的那國，我要審判；此後他們要出來，在這地方事奉我。』

And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.

神又賜給亞伯拉罕割禮的約；於是亞伯拉罕生了以撒，第八天給他行了割禮；以撒生了雅各，雅各生了十二位族長。

And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.

那些族長因為嫉妒，把約瑟賣到埃及去；神卻與他同在，

And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,

救他脫離一切苦難，又在埃及王法老面前賜他恩典和智慧，法老就立他作埃及國的宰相，兼管全家。

And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

後來埃及全地和迦南地遭遇饑荒，大受苦害，我們的祖宗就絕了糧食。

Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.

雅各聽見埃及有糧食，就打發我們的祖宗，就是他的兒子們，初次往那裡去了。

But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

到了第二次，約瑟把自己告訴了他的弟兄，法老也知道了約瑟的親族。

And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.

約瑟打發人去，請他的父親雅各和一切親族，共有七十五人，都來了。

Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.

雅各下到埃及，他和我們的祖宗都死在那裡。

So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,

後來遷到示劍，葬在亞伯拉罕用銀子買了以弗侖兒子們之地的墳墓裡。

And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.

及至神對亞伯拉罕所起誓應許的日期將近，以色列人在埃及增多了，

But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

直到有一個不曉得約瑟的王興起。

Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.

這王對待我們的族類詭詐，苦害我們的祖宗，要他們把嬰孩拋棄，使嬰孩不能存活。

The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.

在這時候，摩西生了，他極其俊美；在他父親家裡撫養了三個月。

In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months:

拋棄之後，法老的女兒把他撿去，養為自己的兒子。

And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

摩西學了埃及人一切的學問，說話行事都有才能。

And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

他將到四十歲，心裡起意去看望他的弟兄以色列人。

And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

他見一個以色列人受冤，就幫助他，為那受欺壓的人報仇，打死了那埃及人。

And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:

他以為弟兄必明白神是藉他手拯救他們，他們卻不明白。

For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them; but they understood not.

第二天，他看見兩個以色列人相爭，就勸解他們，說：「你們是弟兄，為甚麼彼此欺負呢？」

And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?

欺負鄰舍的人推開他，說：「誰立你作我們的首領和審判官呢？

But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?

難道你要殺我，像昨天殺那埃及人一樣嗎？」

Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?

摩西聽見這話，就逃走了，寄居在米甸地，在那裡生了兩個兒子。

Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.

過了四十年，在西奈山的曠野，有一位天使從荊棘叢的火焰中向摩西顯現。

And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

摩西看見，就希奇那異象；他走近去要細看，就有主的聲音說：

When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,

「我是你祖先的神，就是亞伯拉罕的神，以撒的神，雅各的神。」摩西就戰戰兢兢，不敢細看。

Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.

主對他說：「把你腳上的鞋脫下來，因為你所站之地是聖地。

Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.

我的百姓在埃及所受的苦，我實在看見了，他們的嘆息我也聽見了，我下來要拯救他們；你來，我要差你往埃及去。」

I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

以色列人曾推辭摩西說：「誰立你作我們的首領和審判官呢？」但神已藉那在荊棘中向摩西顯現的天使，差摩西來作首領，作救贖的人。

This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

這人領他們出來，行了奇事、神蹟在埃及地，在紅海，在曠野四十年。

He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

那曾對以色列人說「神要從你們弟兄中間給你們興起一位先知像我」的，就是這位摩西。

This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.

這人曾在曠野與那對他說話的天使，並我們的祖宗在一起，接受活潑的聖言，要傳給我們。

This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

他就是我們祖宗不肯順從的，反倒拒絕了他，心裡歸向埃及，

To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,

對亞倫說：「你為我們造神像，引導我們；因為那領我們從埃及地出來的摩西，我們不知道他遭了甚麼事。」

Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

那時，他們造了一個牛犢，帶供物到偶像面前，用自己手所做的歡喜快樂。

And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

於是神轉臉不顧他們，任憑他們事奉天上的日月星辰，如同先知書上所記，說：「以色列家啊，你們在曠野四十年，獻給我的是牛羊嗎？

Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

你們拿摩洛的帳幕和理番你們所造之星的像，就是你們所拜的偶像；我要把你們遷到巴比倫以外去。」

Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

我們祖宗在曠野有法櫃的帳幕，是神吩咐摩西，叫他照所看見的樣式做的。

Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.

這帳幕，我們的祖宗得了，帶領進了這地，到神在他們面前趕出去的外邦人的地；直到大衛的日子。

Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;

大衛在神面前蒙恩，求為雅各的神造一個居所（有古卷：為以色列人）。

Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.

所羅門為神造了殿。

But Solomon built him an house.

然而，至高者並不住人手所造的；如先知所說：

Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,

「主說：天是我的座位，地是我的腳凳；你們要為我造何等的殿宇呢？哪裡是我安息的地方呢？

Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?

這一切不都是我手所造的嗎？」

Hath not my hand made all these things?

「你們這硬著頸項、心與耳未受割禮的人，常時抗拒聖靈！你們的祖宗怎樣，你們也怎樣。

Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

哪一個先知不是你們祖宗逼迫的呢？他們也把預先傳說那義者要來的人殺了；如今你們又把那義者賣了，殺了。

Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:

你們受了天使所傳的律法，竟不守。」

Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.

眾人聽見這話，就極其憤怒，向司提反咬牙切齒。

When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

但司提反被聖靈充滿，定睛望天，看見神的榮耀，又看見耶穌站在神的右邊，

But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

就說：「我看見天開了，人子站在神的右邊。」

And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

眾人大聲喊叫，摀著耳朵，齊心衝上前去，

Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

把他推到城外，用石頭打他。作見證的人，把衣裳放在一個少年人名叫掃羅的腳前。

And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul.

他們正用石頭打的時候，司提反呼籲主說：「求主耶穌接收我的靈魂！」

And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

又跪下大聲喊著說：「主啊，不要將這罪歸於他們！」說了這話，就睡了。

And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
